Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage

Players: 1
Type: Hack N Slash
System: Sega Dreamcast

BEFORE NARIKO, BEFORE KRATOS, THERE WAS GUTS.

Today I am going to review Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage for the Sega Dreamcast. The game itself is based off of the Japanese manga series "Berserk". Now the manga series wasn't released in North America until 2003 Sword of the Berserk was released in 2000 the series the game is based off of wasn't even released in America for 3 years. So when people played this game it felt like they were left in the middle of nowhere. Sad thing is compared to Vampire Hunter D, DBZ:BT, and Recent anime games this one is actually pretty good.

"Creepy guy huh? That's Guts"

You play the game as the feared Black Swordsman Guts. You fight off the bizarre Mandregora and minions of Balzac (I know I know) to rescue and try to find a cure for your loopy girlfriend Casca. The game is a traditional hack and slash adventure. Your weapon of choice a 7 foot sword called Dragonslayer . Every weapon in Guts arsenal in the manga is here at you disposal aside form Dragonslayer you also have a repeating crossbow, grenades, throwing knives, and Guts metal arm that conceals a cannon.

"A one legged man can't win an ass kicking contest unfortunately for this archer Guts is a one armed one eyed man."

The graphics are great and gory with a seven foot sword you can cut anything that isn't human in half. The boss fights are fun they also threw in a bonus fight with a character straight from the anime, and manga. Any fan would recognize him and he remains just as powerful as he is in the anime/manga. The gameplay is fun once you get used to the wall limits its like playing a good ole beat em up . The only problem is that it is an incredibly short game. Even while watching all the cutscenes the game can be completed in less than 6 hours. And If you don't watch the cutscenes the game can be beat in less than 2.

If you're a fan of Berserk I highly recommend this game and just think of it as a one shot story of the manga. All your favorites appear Guts, Puck, Caska, The Skull Knight and others. Even if your not a fan of this game but see it for cheap at a flea market or Ebay I still recommend it.
As a Berserk fan Sword of the Berserk gets four severed limbs out of five.
